Advanced EV management schemes (V2B-V2G)
DUFERCO/SCAME

.
DUFERCO is very interested in grid management optimization to charge as many vehicle as possible after the DSO, optimizing the charging process. In this framework, the power management in domestic or single charging points has been developed in order to avoid blackouts caused by reaching the maximum load capacity of the DSO. The solution was developed by SCAME.
A dynamic approach to the domestic charging will be implemented: the objective is to optimize the charging process according to different optimization targets; and to simultaneously charge several vehicles with a fixed power available at the DSO and/or following different drivers (energy cost, PV production, vehicles trip scheduling etc.).
In particular, in Vehicle-to-Home/Building (V2H/V2B) the EV battery can interact with the building grid and domestic PV, acting as a balance service in place after the POD of the DSO (eg. companies, condominiums, hotels, etc.). In Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) EV battery can give balancing services to the DSO grid to balance power (or energy) variation or needs due to consumption or production variation, or technical defaults. In this case, the balance needs must be communicated by the DSO to the vehicle directly or via the POD.
In order to fine-tune the power management related to optimization of EV consumptions, it is not necessary to change the standard protocol Type 2 Mode 3 charging (IEC 61851). In order to test the V2H/V2B with a bidirectional usage of the EV Battery, a DC charger must be provided with a PCS (Power Control System) connected to the private distribution board. In order to test the V2G, with a bidirectional usage of the EV Battery, a DC charger must be provided with a PCS (Power Control System) connected to the private distribution board and to DSO power management system. In V2G and V2H/B the EV software must be updated and fine-tuned by the carmaker in order to allow a bidirectional flow of the energy in the batteries (ISO 15118). At the same time, the charging station (SCAME) must be DC and have the PCS modified TO communicate with EV and with domestic or DSO grid.

In order to better understand the pros and cons of using EVs for balancing polygenerative grids in Osimo and Oud Heverlee, a three-step optimization will be performed in the MUSE GRIDS project:
- Load optimizing, using the consumption of the EV batteries charging.
- V2H/V2B load balancing, using the EV batteries to balance the load after the DSO.
- V2G load balancing, using the EV batteries to balance the DSO load.

Power to Heat and SETS
GHDVI

.
Smart Electric Thermal Storage (SETS) are energy storage technologies in which electrical energy is converted to heat, this heat is then stored within a heavily insulated core until it is needed to meet the space or water heating needs of the property – the SETS cylinder delivering water heating and the SETS heater providing space heating. The latest materials and ICT technology allow this to be achieved in a highly efficient and cost effective manner.
The intuitive user interface allows the end user to easily select their comfort preferences and the appliances take care of delivering this comfort in an efficient manner. The addition of smart phone App control and the underlying communications infrastructure facilitate remote energy reporting and control for the end user. This connectivity also enables the SETS appliances to be used to provide demand response.
As demonstrated in REAL VALUE project, their large storage capacity decouples the supply of electrical energy from the heat demand, this flexibility enables intra-day load shifting along with the ability to rapidly charge or stop charging the appliances. When connected to an aggregation platform these loads can provide a significant source of distribution connected flexibility with the ability to deliver very fast acting grid services, as well as delivering services of longer duration. The fact that they are distributed across the electricity network and each appliance is addressable on an individual basis, means that the appliances can also be used to address localised constraint management.
Both the SETS space heating and water heating appliances have been commercially available for the last five years as standalone products.
GALULarge Insulated Outdoor water tanks
GALU’ is specialized in manufacturing and delivering customized, easy to install, large size hot water tanks. GALÚ Colossus has superior heat retention capabilities, and it is normally delivered Pre-insulated and pre-finished, minimising on site works making GALU’ Colossus a big flexible giant. A specific solution for OSIMO DHN and coupling with local high temperature HP will be realized, considering local weather and internal temperature. A suitable insulation will be identified also facilitating stratification in the TES to avoid thermal losses.
